Carotid Artery Ultrasound Scan
About Carotid IMT (Intima Media Thickness) Ultrasound Screening
A carotid IMT ultrasound screening utilizes non-invasive ultrasound (sound waves) to assess the risk of carotid artery disease. The carotid IMT measures the thickness of the inner two layers of the carotid arteries (the intima and media) and the analysis can reveal your risk for cardiovascular disease. Carotid IMT can be a useful screening in some asymptomatic patients at intermediate risk of cardiovascular disease.
Throughout the stops of the ride, Heart Across America will be offering free carotid IMT screenings utilizing Samsung’s Ultrasound Systems. Carotid IMT screenings are recommended for men ages 45 – 75 and women ages 55 – 75. A registered sonographer will perform these quick, non-invasive ultrasound scans in about 10 minutes. A physician with expertise in carotid IMT will interpret the results of the screening, and you will receive the results to share with your personal primary care physician who can determine which additional screening tests for carotid artery disease may be appropriate for you.
